Phinity Labs' funding, investors and customers could not be confirmed from any primary source. PitchBook, Tracxn and Caplight profiles exist but are paywalled or robots-blocked to automated retrieval. The entire evidence base is a directory description plus job postings. [WEAK] If Chip design and EDA is under serious consideration, this needs a direct conversation with the company or a paid data pull — nothing on this page substitutes for that.

Phinity Labs is described as a "domain-specific environment play for chip-design and technical optimization workflows", out of Pear VC's PearX S25 batch, and is hiring a Founding Senior RTL Design or DV Engineer in San Francisco (AlignList; LinkedIn posting).

It is the only vertical chip-design environment company identifiable in any vendor directory. The RL-environment directory's own summary line says outright that no vendor in it focuses primarily on chip design, CAD, video/VFX, wet lab, construction or skilled trades (RL List).

Note that the directories themselves are SEO properties, not registries — useful for name discovery, unreliable for funding data. That is why nothing here is stated as fact.

Why the vacancy is not the opportunity it looks like

The tool vendors already own the data layer. Cadence's JedAI platform "aggregates waveforms, coverage reports, timing analyses, and physical layouts into a unified training data repository, creating a compounding data moat" (SemiAnalysis). The highest-value chip-design training signal is not RTL source — it is verification and signoff telemetry, and that flows into Cadence's repository as a by-product of tool usage customers already pay for. Synopsys runs the same play through AgentEngineer with AMD and Microsoft named as partners (Synopsys).

The Big Three hold over 85% share of an $18B (2025) → $28–31B (2030) market; Synopsys holds 84–85% of synthesis and 90%+ of PrimeTime signoff, Siemens 85%+ of Calibre physical verification (SemiAnalysis). You will not out-collect them on the data their own tools emit.

No frontier lab is buying. OpenAI's GDPval covers 44 occupations and excludes chip design (OpenAI). No frontier-lab subject-matter-expert posting for chip design was found. The one adjacent signal is Anthropic hiring a Research Engineer, Chip Design RL (Anthropic careers) — an in-house role, which reads as insourcing rather than a procurement intention. The realistic buyers are Cadence, Synopsys, Siemens, NVIDIA, ChipAgents and Cognichip: a small set of extremely sophisticated customers who mostly generate their own data.

The benchmark opening is weak. VerilogEval, RTLLM, CVDP and ChipVerilog all exist and none is saturated (arXiv; arXiv; arXiv; arXiv). "There is no benchmark" is not an argument available here, which removes the standard opening move.

The cost structure is the disqualifier

Fabless companies spend $80–150K per engineer per year on tools, IP and verification; IDMs $40–80K (SemiAnalysis). You cannot produce execution-verified RTL data without a simulator, and open-source alternatives do not reflect the commercial flows a buyer would pay to model. That is a capital line, not a labour line — the opposite of the economics that make Design and UI/UX or video work for a small operator.

The supply side is equally hostile. Semiconductor invention-assignment agreements bite on scope, capturing off-hours work "related to company business", which for a chip engineer covers most of what they could produce for you. California's §2870 carve-out is narrow and still fails where the invention relates to the employer's business; Texas has no equivalent statute, and Austin holds much of the workforce (Promise Legal). Against a BLS wage floor of $125,040/yr ($60.12/hr) for electrical and electronics engineers across 297,900 US jobs, and a projected 273,000-engineer shortfall by 2030, the people are scarce, expensive and the most aggressively IP-bound population in the atlas.

What could not be established

Phinity's funding amount, round stage, investors and valuation. Any customer, named or unnamed. Revenue. Headcount and founding date. Whether Phinity sells environments, data, or a product. The sources that would answer these — PitchBook, Tracxn, Caplight — are paywalled or robots-blocked, and no primary source exists. What to learn from it: an empty vendor directory is not an empty market — seven empty categories usually means the buyers are not there, and in chip design the data that matters is telemetry the tool vendors already own.
